Description

Who We Are- Founded in 1994, Lula Lake Land Trust is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to conservation, successfully safeguarding more than 12,000 acres on Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Our properties include ecosystems classified as “high conservation value,” providing critical habitat for a diverse range of plant and wildlife species that depend on our stewardship efforts to thrive. Our goal is to protect wildlife and natural spaces/resources along the Lookout Mountain Plateau and Rock Creek Watershed and educate visitors as to why conservation is so important in the first place, while providing a safe place and space for them to recreate responsibly. Our dedicated Stewardship team, though small with just two staff members, manages approximately 4,000 acres of land owned by our organization. With a small staff, we naturally depend on volunteers to help us achieve our mission of conservation, education, and low-impact recreation.

Stewardship Project- Under the leadership of Mason Price, our Land Manager of four years, we will undertake restoration projects on Lula Lake’s Moonshine Trail system. We’ll hike about a half mile in to our project work site, carrying our tools and supplies for the day. Volunteers will use hand tools and saws to clear vegetation through the corridor of the new trail. Then, work will begin to dig into the tread to create a sustainable trail surface.

Meeting Location/Parking- We will meet Mason at Lula Lake's Core Preserve property, located at: 5000 Lula Lake Rd. Lookout Mountain, GA 30750. After you drive through the gate, you will see a large parking area on your left. Park there, and Mason will give us an orientation and fill you in on what we'll be doing for the day. We will then hike across the street to the Moonshine trail system where we will begin working on the stewardship project.

What to bring: Please bring a reusable water bottle, snacks, clothing suitable for the weather, and a rain jacket if there is rain in the forecast. We recommend wearing long pants to help protect against ticks and poison ivy. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots suitable for hiking are required. Please do not wear sandals or flip-flops. Bug spray and sunscreen are recommended. We will provide the tools and work-gloves for the day.

Site Supervisor- Our Land Manager, Mason Price, will be the Site Supervisor and point of contact. For any questions leading up to the volunteer project, he can reached at: mason@lulalake.org.

Allergies- In the warmer months, we do see yellow jackets nested in the ground. If you or anyone in your group is allergic to stings or anything else in nature, please bring your own EpiPen or Benadryl, as we do not carry them on site.
