Information Collection, Use, and Sharing

Information Collection

United Way gathers personally identifiable data when voluntarily submitted by you, which may include: name, address, zip code, email address, phone number, and birth date ("personal information").  We may also collect information that is about you, but that does not individually identify you, such as your gender, ethnicity, donor choice information and user group. We collect this information directly from you when you provide it to us (e.g., when you register as a volunteer or community partner or fill in forms to sign up for a volunteer opportunity), or if you contact us.

As you navigate through and interact with our Website, we may use automatic data collection technologies to collect certain information about your equipment, browsing actions and patterns, including:

  • Your IP (Internet Protocol) address to administer our Website. When a web browser or email application requests a web page or email from another computer on the Internet, it automatically gives that computer the IP address where it should send the information. The IP address does not contain personal information.
  • Details of your visits to our Website, including traffic data, location data and other communication data and the resources that you access and use on the Website.

The technologies we use for automatic data collection may include cookies.  The cookies that are currently used on the Website are called "session" cookies, and are used to identify a particular visit to the Website. Session cookies expire after a short time or when you close your web browser. Due to the communications standards on the Internet, when you visit the Website, United Way automatically receives the URL of the website from which you came and the website to which you are going when you leave the website. We also receive the IP address of your computer (or the proxy server you use to access the World Wide Web), your computer operating system and type of web browser you are using, as well as the name of your internet service provider (ISP). We may use this information to analyze overall trends to help us improve our services, but we do not generally link this information to personal information in any way.

The information that United Way automatically collects is used only in the aggregate and does not include personal information, but may be maintained or associated with personal information we collect in other ways. This aggregate data helps us improve our Website. We use this data to determine how much our visitors use parts of the Website, so that we can continuously improve our Website. We also may provide aggregated statistical "ratings" information to our partners about how our visitors collectively use our Website.

However, due to the open communication nature of the Internet we cannot guarantee that communication between you and us and us and you will be free from unauthorized access by third parties.
