Founded in 1994, Lula Lake Land Trust is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to conservation, successfully safeguarding more than 12,000 acres on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, from development. Our properties include ecosystems classified as “high conservation value,” providing critical habitat for a diverse range of plant and wildlife species that depend on our stewardship efforts to thrive. Our goal is to protect wildlife and natural spaces/resources along the Lookout Mountain Plateau and Rock Creek Watershed and educate visitors as to why conservation is so important in the first place, while providing a safe space for them to recreate responsibly. Our dedicated Stewardship team, though small with just two staff members, manages approximately 4,000 acres of land owned by our organization. With a small staff, we naturally depend on volunteers to help us achieve our mission of conservation, education, and low-impact recreation.
What We Do
Lula Lake Land Trust is a non-profit organization that owns and manages land across Lookout Mountain, GA. We are a conservation-based Land Trust that acquires land and puts federal restrictions on development and access for as long as the land exists. Since we started in 1994, we have helped protect over 12,000 acres and we currently own and manage 4,000 acres.
As part of our ongoing conservation work, we are actively protecting Eastern Hemlock trees, a vital keystone species, from the invasive Hemlock woolly adelgid. Our goal is to treat 12,000 Hemlocks across our properties by year’s end.
We provide free educational opportunities to a diverse array of schools and organizations, ranging from public, private, and magnet schools to homeschool programs, universities, and fellow nonprofits.
Programming is another focus of our Land Trust. There are opportunities to participate in community events with varying themes, guided hikes, group trail runs, and mountain bike rides. To see a list of upcoming events, visit: lulalake.org/events.
