Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors is seeking energetic community groups, corporate teams, civic organizations, and neighborhood crews to help maintain and beautify our local public spaces. As part of our Mulch Crew, your group will assist in spreading fresh wood mulch around playground structures, garden beds, and park trees.
This hands-on, high-impact volunteer effort directly contributes to children's safety by maintaining proper shock-absorbing depths under play equipment, while also keeping Chattanooga’s green spaces healthy, vibrant, and welcoming.
Key Responsibilities
Transport & Spread Mulch: Load wheelbarrows with wood mulch and transport it to designated playground impact zones, tree rings, and landscaping beds.
Level & Finish: Rake and spread mulch evenly to ensure proper depth for playground safety standards and weed suppression.
Keep Pathways Clear: Sweep and clear excess mulch off sidewalks, walkways, and play surfaces.
Tool & Site Care: Assist in loading and gathering departmental tools at the completion of the project.
Qualifications & Requirements
Physical Stamina: Volunteers should be comfortable performing moderate physical labor outdoors (bending, lifting up to 25–30 lbs, pushing wheelbarrows, and raking).
Attire: Must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes (work boots or athletic sneakers) and weather-appropriate clothing that you don't mind getting dirty.
Age Requirements: Volunteers under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult supervisor or have signed parent/guardian waiver forms.
