Who We Are

Mission: To enable African Americans, other ethnic minorities and disadvantaged persons to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights.

The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga is an affiliate of the National Urban League, the nation’s oldest and largest community based movement devoted to empowering African Americans and other underserved individuals to enter the economic and social mainstream. The Urban League movement was founded in 1910, and the National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads our nonprofit, nonpartisan, community based initiatives. The heart of the Urban League movement is the professionally staffed Urban League affiliates in over 100 cities in 36 states and the District of Columbia.

What We Do

The Urban League operates through a network of local affiliates across the United States, offering various services, such as:

  1. Workforce Development: Programs that provide job training, career counseling, and job placement assistance to help individuals secure meaningful employment.
  2. Education: Initiatives that aim to close the educational achievement gap, offering mentorship, tutoring, college prep, and STEM programs for youth.
  3. Housing: The organization helps individuals and families achieve homeownership, provides financial literacy training, and offers counseling to prevent foreclosure.
  4. Health Initiatives: The Urban League focuses on promoting access to healthcare services, reducing health disparities, and providing education on preventive care and wellness.
  5. Advocacy and Policy: The Urban League advocates for policies that promote equality, justice, and economic opportunity at the local, state, and national levels.

By providing direct services and advocating for systemic change, the Urban League seeks to empower individuals and uplift entire communities​.
