Who We Are

Mission: To help alleviate poverty for all Chattanooga citizens and help create economic stability through historical, literacy and educational activities.

The Mary Walker Historical and Educational Foundation is a Christian faith-based nonprofit organization based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We offer reading instruction for people of all ages and we are working to bring unheard positive voices to the public through journalism training and publishing in local print and online publications. Mary Walker was born a slave and learned to read at the age of 117! Our initiatives aim to empower individuals through education, thereby contributing to the overall well-being and economic stability of the Chattanooga community.

We are looking for volunteers who are excited about our mission to serve people who have little in order to help them become successful, thriving citizens.

What We Do

The foundation offers various programs to support this mission, including:

  • Community Awareness: Mobilizing churches to support literacy efforts and economic stability through summer empowerment camps.
  • Family Crisis Support: Providing specially trained advocates to support victims and survivors through crisis situations.
  • Continuation of Education: Monitoring, mentoring, and awarding scholarships to college and vocational students.
  • Promoting Literacy and Journalism: Partnering with local newspapers to foster journalism and literacy efforts.
