Who We Are
Mission: To provide immersive, place-based educational experiences in nature for school-aged children.
The name Wauhatchie is a Cherokee word that can be defined as “Great Wolf” or “ Beautiful Mountain and Valley.” The Lookout Valley community in which our main campus resides is rich in history and lore. Like most of this area of Tennessee, Lookout Valley has roots within the Native American culture. In fact, one of the first names of this community was Wauhatchie, named in honor of the Cherokee Chieftain, Chief Skyuka Wauhatchie Glass. (From The History of the Lookout Valley Community by Richard Alexander McKeel).
What We Do
Wauhatchie Forest School provides immersive, place-based experiences in nature for school-aged students that encourage their holistic growth, a love for learning, and compassion for all. At Wauhatchie Forest School, we celebrate the uniqueness in all creation and recognize the richness that diversity offers. We strive to cultivate an environment that encourages everyone to be their authentic self – safely and respectfully – so we all may benefit.
