Docents, also referred to as Aquarium Guides, are stationed throughout the galleries to interpret exhibits by offering educational information about the habitats, animals, and plants to visitors. Some situations allow Docents to use props to help explain the exhibit elements. Being a Docent is a combination of correct educational information and good customer service. Docents do not work with animals.

Volunteer: Saturday Visitor Center Host

Chattanooga Audubon Society's Visitor Center serves as a hub for education, advocacy, and community engagement. Volunteers find themselves immersed in a vibrant atmosphere, surrounded by passionate individuals who share a love for nature and conservation.

As a Visitor Center Greeter, your role is vital in creating an unforgettable experience for every guest. You'll be their go-to guide, sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for the trails that wind through the picturesque landscapes. Offering personalized recommendations, you'll help visitors choose the perfect trail to embark upon. But that's not all! As you greet and engage with guests, you'll have the chance to delve into the fascinating history of Audubon Acres. From tales of the legendary Robert Sparks Walker Cabin to the captivating stories of the land's indigenous people, you'll weave a narrative that transports visitors back in time and ignites their curiosity.

So, if you're ready to be a part of something extraordinary, to share the beauty of nature and the allure of history, become a Visitor Center Greeter at the Chattanooga Audubon Society. The impact of volunteers is felt far beyond the center itself. By promoting environmental stewardship and fostering a deep connection with nature, volunteers become catalysts for change in the community. Their enthusiasm, knowledge, and dedication leave visitors in awe and inspire others to embrace sustainable living and protect the natural wonders that surround us.

*Visitor’s Center volunteers also handle tasks such as answering the phone, running the cash register, and providing guests with information about the land and trails.

Shifts are 9:00am-1:00pm or 1:00pm-5:00pm

Due to the nature of this role, we ask that you commit to one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of 3 months. Weekend Volunteers are asked to commit to 2 Saturdays per month. This frees up our staff to work on programming, administrative work, and other tasks that require them to be away from the visitor’s center.
To apply, please contact Jessica Whitehorn at jwhitehorn@chattaudubon.org.

All those interested in Volunteering will go through at least 5 days of training. We ask that at least 2 of those training days be on a week day if possible.

Volunteer: Virtual Volunteers Needed to Sponsor/Adopt Deployed Soldiers

We are looking for volunteers interested in adopting or "sponsoring" a deployed service member or soldier. This opportunity is entirely virtual and done independently. We have many deployed troops who have little to no family support, and if you choose to adopt a service member, you are agreeing to send monthly cards and letters to that service member during his or her deployment so that they will know they are appreciated and not forgotten. The care package may be of any size or value, we just want our troops to know that someone cares. We do require a background check for all interested volunteers, since we pass out sensitive military information, including names and locations. Interested volunteers may sign up to begin their background check by visiting www.friendsofthetroops.org/volunteer. Serious inquiries only, please.

Volunteer: Shelter Volunteers

Volunteers and fosters are an integral part of Humane Educational Society's family. Volunteers and fosters help make our program successful.  Their work directly contributes to our high save rate, and they are the lifeline of our team. Simply, if we didn’t have such an amazing group of kind and caring ‘friends of shelter pets’ to dedicate their time and energy, we wouldn’t exist. On behalf of all our staff and shelter critters, thank you for your unconditional love and support!  At Humane Educational Society, there is a wide variety of volunteer opportunity for people who care about supporting homeless and adoptable pets in our community. In addition to our regular volunteer opportunities, we offer Group/Corporate Volunteer Days as well as Community Service Volunteering for Students.   To learn more about and apply to become a volunteer at Humane Educational Society, please visit our website for more information about our volunteer program https://www.heschatt.org/volunteerfoster

Volunteer: Administrative Assistant Volunteer - Part-time Regulary Scheduled

Hello!
We are seeking two people to help fill a full-time schedule as an administrative assistant. The volunteers must be available for a specified shift each week, and have their own transportation.

We offer free resources to those affected by epilepsy in 10 Tennessee counties and 3 North Georgia counties. Since we are a nonprofit, the workload can sometimes outweigh the staff available.

You would be working with me, Rita, to help fill in gaps where I just don't have enough time to take care of some things. I prioritize the clients' needs, so sometimes, other things can be neglected. The volunteers must be able to use Excel at a beginner level, and be detail oriented. Please only answer if you are able to commit to the same schedule every week for at least 3 months.

The hours we will need to cover with two volunteers are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Once I hear from you, I will send you a link to a registration form, and a quiz to identify the environment you are happiest working in. Then we will have a chat, and if all goes well, we will get you scheduled to help out!

I look forward to hearing from you! Rita

Volunteer: Pet for a Month-Foster Parent

The Pet Placement Center is a small facility and we rely on foster homes to be able to help more homeless animals. Foster parents are fully supported by PPC in the form of medical care, food, and adoption. We often need people to foster kittens that are too young to come into the shelter and to foster puppies/dogs for socialization. We also need fostering for some of our older pets that don't seem to adjust well in the shelter environment. This is limited commitment. Any time an animal can spend in a home helps that animal become more adoptable. This is a wonderful opportunity for those that can't make the full time commitment to a pet or would like to help an animal for a short time frame. If you would like more information about becoming a foster parent for a dog, cat, puppy or kitten, please contact us.
