Gratefull is a free, city-wide Thanksgiving potluck that takes place at one long table in the middle of MLK Boulevard. The event, formerly known as One Table, was started by Causeway in 2014 because we believe that in order to build a city that is an honest reflection of its residents, everyone should be invited to the table. Gratefull is now an annual event in Chattanooga and has been replicated in six cities across the southeast. Volunteers for the Volunteer Tent will help us get ready for volunteers to arrive, assist with check-in, and provide necessary items to the volunteers for their stations. Once finished, volunteers are welcome to grab a meal and a seat at our long table.

The Maclellan Family Shelter will be collecting donations from individuals attending Gratefull. We need 4 volunteers to help with the collection of donated items, ensure the items are organized, and assist with loading them into the donation bus.

During Event – Seaters/Table Tenders will direct guests to open seats as they leave the serving line. To help keep the table clean for the next guest, volunteers will also remove used cups, plates, and other items from open areas. Volunteers are encouraged to work together to allow each person a chance to enjoy the food during the event.

During Event – Exit Survey volunteers will approach guests as they begin to leave and ask if they would mind sharing feedback about the event. The survey will only take about 30 seconds. Volunteers can work in pairs, and each person will have time to enjoy lunch at the table.

As a Team Lead, you will be responsible for greeting and informing volunteers of their duties. Team Leads will receive a short training the week of the event during orientation (no longer than 30 minutes). To ensure accuracy with weather and logistics, orientation will be held the week before the event. River City staff will show you where all materials are located and provide you with maps, a list of your volunteers, and details for your shift.

Orientation Requirement
Team Leads must attend ONE of the following orientation meetings:
Tuesday, November 12th at 5:30 PM – Bessie Smith Cultural Lawn
Wednesday, November 13th at 12:00 PM – Bessie Smith Cultural Lawn

If you do not attend an orientation meeting, your role as Team Lead will be reassigned.

Event Day Details
Location: 200 E. MLK Blvd, in front of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center

Check-In: Please report to the blue River City volunteer tent upon arrival. Coffee and snacks will be available for volunteers. Important Reminders

During Event – Green Team volunteers will help make Gratefull as eco-friendly as possible! Volunteers will be stationed at sets of trash, recycling, and compost bins, guiding guests on what items belong in each bin. Signage will be provided to assist. When a bin becomes full, volunteers will take the bag to the designated drop location (map provided) and replace it with a new bag.

Volunteers must be able to lift 40+ lbs. Shifts can rotate so that everyone has a chance to get food and a seat at the table.

Line Balloon Holder volunteers will be stationed at the end of the serving line. A large yellow balloon will be attached to your wrist, making it easy for guests to identify the end of the line. Your role is to help direct people toward the table once they reach you. Volunteers will switch halfway through the shift so everyone has the opportunity to grab a meal and a seat at the table.

Food Transporters for Restaurant Drop-Offs will be stationed behind the Bessie Smith at the back kitchen door access to direct cars and manage food drop-offs. Volunteers will ensure the area remains clear of unnecessary vehicles and has ample open space for restaurants to park. Food drop-off will occur between 10:30 – 11:15 AM. Volunteers will also assist restaurants with carrying food to the serving tables on either side of the main table.

Stage Manager volunteers will help coordinate the stage setup and ensure that the program runs smoothly. Responsibilities include: guiding guest speakers on and off the stage, managing the flow of performances and announcements, and monitoring the area to prevent any unauthorized persons from accessing the stage or microphone.
